Put God on Your List – July 14, 2002
We live in a world of input. The information highway zooms right to our door, and from all sides we are barraged by the pressure to keep up, achieve, and be “in the loop.” Youngsters are exposed, as never before, to the realities of grown-up life. News multiplies before our eyes, much of it frightening and worrisome.
In the midst of this swirling whirlpool, we pencil in our plans. We make lists and fill calendars, dashing from one errand to another as we fall into step with those around us who seem to be accomplishing so much. Often we sacrifice those moments most essential to our peace and happiness—time spent with God.
It’s not easy to turn off the stream of activity that so quickly crowds out time for God. Yet most of us claim that closeness with our Father in Heaven should be our top priority. One way to achieve that goal is to put God on our list. We can set aside time to pray, time to study scripture, and time to ponder. We can write down our appointment with our Maker, and establish a daily moment of meditation—a pause for peace.
As we cross out those activities that interfere with our priorities, we’ll feel our stress decrease and our spirituality increase. A calm will settle over our families as we find time to listen, laugh, and just be there for those who need us.
As we keep our appointment each day, our souls will grow. The world may remain hectic, but we’ll be removed from its constant influence and better able to sort through the information that matters. Our relationships will improve, and we’ll find absolute peace as we turn to its only true source.
