Windows – May 19, 2002
Each of us sees life through a different window. Our experiences, choices, and situations give each of us our own view. The newlywed sees the world very differently from the person married fifty years. A concert pianist, a mother of toddlers, a person confined to a wheelchair, and an F-16 pilot each see and hear different things in life.
One of life’s greatest lessons is to learn all we can through our window. When we learn and grow, we’re happier. But most importantly, we then have something unique and important to share with others.
One woman, upon discovering that her third child was autistic, began to learn all she could about autism. Without degrees or formal training, she has become a recognized expert and is contributing new insights that will eventually help those dealing with autism. She has become a great strength and support to other parents of autistic children and a much better mother to her son. What would have happened if she had shut her eyes and refused to look out her unique window and learn?
When we realize that every view can be enriched by learning, our perspective brightens and clears. Our window on the world can then bring growth and happiness to us and to those we love.
