The Music of Life – April 28, 2002

If all God’s creations could sing, what beautiful music might we hear around the world?  Perhaps such beautiful music is already there, and we simply need to listen.

Certainly nature gives us music:  the melodious warble of the nightingale, the haunting moonlight song of the howling wolf.  Leaves rustling in the breeze make soft, whispering music.  Gentle raindrops fall in soothing rhythm.  From the murmur of a brooklet to the thunder of a mighty waterfall, nature is alive with its own music, adding richness and variety to life.

And what of God’s greatest creation—mankind?  What music do we make with our lives?  Just as nature is not silent, neither should we be still.  We need not be an accomplished composer.  We can add beauty and harmony to life by the words we choose, the songs we sing, and the service we render.

Stopping to chat with the downtrodden, to hum a lullaby for a crying child, or to offer encouragement to a coworker—these are beautiful verses in life’s song.  As we answer a harsh remark with gentleness, as we help enemies find resolution and peace, as we recognize life’s many wonders and express sincere gratitude for them, we are creating life’s most beautiful and enduring melodies.

Nature resounds with wondrous music.  Let mankind join the chorus, uniting our hearts and hands and voices in a song of harmony and love.
