Look Up – March 03, 2002

A man walked sadly along with his hands in his pockets and his eyes to the ground.  He had no work, no food, and little hope.  He thought he might find a coin or some small valuable lying on the ground, and so he walked on with eyes cast down.  He passed a factory with a sign in the window reading “Help Wanted,” but he didn’t see it.  He passed by a bakery advertising “Free Samples Today,” but with his only view still of the ground, he went his way hungry.  He passed a cathedral with a sign that read, “Come in and find God,” but he saw only the dirty street.

We all face times of trouble and darkness.  The ancient prophet Micah gave us these words of hope.  He said, “When I sit in darkness, the Lord shall be a light unto me.”1 To find the light that will guide us through our troubles, we must look up.  Then we may see opportunities we’ve never before noticed.  Such is the case of a 50-year-old man who found himself in deep despair after losing the business he’d worked years to develop.  After study and earnest prayer, he and his wife felt impressed that he should return to school for a degree in an entirely new field—a bold move at his age.  Now, a few years later, he has settled into his new profession and enjoys a life even more rewarding than before.

Whatever our difficulties may be, God is there.  He invites each of us to look—not down, but up—and allow Him to be that light that guides us to a happier, brighter future.
