The Greatness Within – December 16, 2001

The Christmas story teaches much about recognizing true greatness.  Who would think to look in a manger, among animals and straw, for the newborn King?  The humble shepherds would find Him there.  The wise men would follow His star and come to worship Him.  But who of Jesus’ own household would herald His birth?  After all, Bethlehem was Joseph’s “own city,”1 but Joseph and Mary would find neither room nor welcome there.

Later in the Lord’s life, He would return to Nazareth, the place of His youth—home to the townspeople who’d watched Him grow in “wisdom and stature.2  Many of them had been eyewitnesses to His miracles, His teachings, and His perfect love.  But those close to Him would again reject Him, saying, “Is not this the carpenter’s son?”3  And Jesus would reply, “A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house.”4

Do we ever do the same to members of our household or community because we think we know them so well?

So much of the goodness in others comes to life when we open our eyes and hearts and see them for the wonderful people they really are.  Recognizing the true greatness of those close to us brings out the best in them—and in us.

This is a season of rejoicing, of singing praises to Him who was born in a lowly stable, yet whose greatness and magnificent love inspire each of us to find the best within.
