Improving the Atmosphere – October 14, 2001

Most people would agree that our greatest happiness is found in the home.  It’s there we learn the vital lessons of love and friendship that carry us through life.  But even though we know this, we don’t always remember to show our appreciation for family members.  The longer we forget, the more an atmosphere of apathy or even negativity can set in.

A mother and father decided they wanted to improve the atmosphere in their home.  They secretly planned a special dinner for their children to show their appreciation for them.  The mother prepared a fancy chicken dish that she normally reserved for special visitors.    When she set the table with a candelabra and fine china, the children took turns guessing who was coming for dinner.  The mother never said a word, but continued her preparations with a smile.  It wasn’t until the family finally sat down to eat that the mother and father explained.  They let the children know that it was actually they who were the special guests that evening.  In highly unusual form, the children were speechless.

The family spent the rest of the evening discussing all the things they were thankful for.  An atmosphere of peace and love was created that drew family members closer together.  One of the youngest children asked if they could eat dinner like that every night.  From this question, the family realized that no matter what they had for dinner, they wanted every night to feel this way.

Our homes can be a sanctuary from the outside world, a place where every member has a feeling of security and belonging.  By showing appreciation on a regular basis for those we love, we can establish an atmosphere where our greatest happiness can flourish.
