Lord, Speak to Me – September 09, 2001

Lord, Speak to Me – September 09, 2001

Does God speak to His children?  Most of us would answer, “Yes.”  But some might say, “Not to me personally, of course.”

We understand that the Almighty talks to those who influence the fate of nations: Abraham, the father of all Israel; Moses, deliverer of the Hebrew slaves; Paul, an Apostle of the early Christian church.  But we may be less sure that God speaks directly to an ordinary individual.

Our uncertainty may come not because such communication is rare, but because we overlook it.  We can miss much of what a family member says to us when our attention is elsewhere.  Sometimes a familiar voice, almost like background music, goes unheeded.  Is it possible God speaks to us at all times and in all places, but we don’t hear?

God speaks to every soul, because He loves us, and seeks to comfort and guide us, hour by hour, whether we be statesman or salesman, prisoner or philanthropist.  The Apostle Peter testified, “God is no respecter of persons.”1  But how does the Father speak?  It’s the way God speaks that we too often miss.  In the songs of birds, in the whisper of the wind, in poems read, in scriptures and sermons, in the conversation of children, and deep within our own hearts.  In all these, people have heard messages of love, forgiveness, hope, and peace, and known them to be God’s direct guidance to them personally.

In truth, the Lord does speak to us, and we hear when we listen.
