The Message of Spring – Sunday, March 09, 1980

Yes, awake thou wintry earth. Fling off thy sadness. . . renew thy bright array with fairest blooms of spring. Ah, the sights and sounds and smells of spring—the shimmer of dancing rain. . . the aroma of fresh turned soil. . . the promise of pink in an apricot bloom. . . the glint of morning sunlight on the window sill. No wonder we feel that increased vigor each morning.

Spring draws us deeper into that mysterious and universal stream we call life. We eagerly await this joyful season because of the profound message it sends about the eternal process of self-renewal and recommitment. Each year we watch the ritual of spring, and we learn more about our own natural growth processes, about our own need to revitalize, about our own potential for development.

Just as there is a reawakening in the world around us, so there is a reawakening within each of us. We feel a new attentiveness that heightens every experience. We yearn to reach out to others. . .to consider new ideas. . . to develop inner resources. And as we enlarge our human horizons, we find that old challenges become new opportunities, just as old trees push forth new branches.

When spring fever strikes, we traditionally clean out our homes and let the fresh breezes blow through open windows. So too can we open the windows of our lives to the fresh breezes of new beginnings, new friendships, new dedication.

The message of spring is just that simple—the fresh breezes of new beginnings. It is a message of renewal. Our talent, our intelligence, our happiness are never lost. They may rest for a period as a tree rests for the winter. But they are ever renewable as the spring bud renews the twig. The warm sunshine of faith, the fresh rain of encouragement, the bright light of purpose. . . that’s all it takes for our personal renewal, for our personal spring.

That’s the simple message of the season. Let us give thanks for the divine origin of this wonderful elixir—spring—provided for us by a loving God.
