Invite His Light – Sunday, May 17, 1998

A woman vacationing with her children was convinced by them to visit a popular tourist attraction—a cave filled with many wonders of nature.  She had experienced the trauma of claustrophobia in the past and was hesitant to go in with her children.  Since they were in their teens and a guide was leading the tour through the cave, she knew they would be safe and decided it would be best if she waited outside.  The children were disappointed.  They wanted her to be with them to enjoy the beauty of the cave.  They persisted with their encouragement until she consented to join them.  After traveling several minutes inside the cave, she began to feel as if the walls were closing in on her.  In near panic, she froze in her tracks and said to her children, “I can’t go on.”  One of her sons replied: “Mom, look up.  See the light coming through that hole?  Just look up at that light and you’ll be okay.”  As she looked up at the light, the panic left, and she was able to continue on with them.

At times we may feel overcome by the many different responsibilities and problems we face—and may even feel that life is closing in on us.  That’s when we need to remember the importance of looking up to the light.  And who is that light?  The words of a favorite hymn give us the answer: “The Lord is my light; he is my joy and my song.  By day and by night he leads me; he leads me along.”1

If you have drifted away from the light, it is easy to find it again.  Something as simple as a quiet prayer of thankfulness to the Lord for even just one light blessing, He has given can put you back in touch with the light.  Something as simple as singing a hymn that used to touch your heart can bring His peace to enlighten your soul again.  And something as simple as giving service to someone in need can signal Heaven to open up and shine a little light on you.  One thing is certain:  if we want the light in our lives, we need to invite it.

Thomas S. Monson said, “Always walk toward the light, and the shadows of life will fall behind you.”2 The light of our loving Father in Heaven is there for all to enjoy and to be blessed by every day of our lives.  All we need to do is invite His light and look up.
