A Promise of Peace – August 12, 2001
The Lord’s invitation to us is a promise of peace. He said: “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”1
Certainly, much about life can be troublesome. So many of us are worried—wondering about the present, and anxious about the future.
Some search for peace on the dead-end streets of selfishness, or take unsatisfying detours through empty fields of pleasure—only to discover the same feelings of unrest that led them there. The fact is, we can’t just give ourselves a “pep talk” and expect to feel the kind of peace that truly comforts during tribulation. It takes more than simply “changing our attitude” or “getting away” to feel the peace of God. His peace, the peace that carries us through difficult times, comes only as we draw near to Him. Whether early or late in life, each of us can discover this for ourselves.
When unsettling information disturbed the peace in her home, a mother became sleepless with worry. Realizing she wouldn’t long be able to function that way, she knelt in fervent prayer. She spoke her heart, and then humbly pondered what aspects of the problem she could change. In the process of seeking for heaven’s wisdom and watch care, she was blessed with the peace she would need to face an uncertain future.
This peace, most treasured, is God’s promise to each of us.
