Another Day In June – June 01, 1941
By many unmistakable signs, we are reminded that we have come upon another day in June. Added to the cold confirmation of the calendar we have that more convincing evidence which has to do with the feel of the air, the blueness of the sky, and the vigorous unfoldment of all living things.
There are also other traditional signs of June—such things as leaving the shelter of school and facing the facts of life—commencement, we call it. It has also been a favored month of beginning for young men and young women who venture into life together, with all that it means. It has been traditionally a month of lightness of heart, of pleasant prospects, of eager anticipation of things to come. Unfortunately, in these respects this is not altogether the June we had hoped for.
Nature has done her part well, but men, speaking collectively, have failed miserably in theirs. And to many who are beginning life, commencement, this June, means the commencement of things that are not of our choosing, and that we had earnestly wished to avoid. All this is difficult to understand. Such things have also been difficult for other generations to understand, but somehow they have come and gone.
Sometimes it seems that we pay for the mistakes of others—that we are living together in a house that someone else, not we, chooses to burn down or break up, and the injustice of it all to those who are not responsible for it, cries out for explanation. But while now it seems that we pay for the mistakes of others, ultimately we shall pay only for our own. And so, to you who are beginning life, if your June is not what you had hoped for, at least it offers a challenge to rise above the circumstances in which you find yourself, and carry through whatever lies before you, making the best that can be made of your own time and generation.
The Lord God will ask no more of you, life will ask no more of you and somehow there will come compensation for all the losses which were not of your own making, if you keep faith by living in accordance with the best that your time has to offer. This is the assurance that another June brings to a troubled generation.
