Educated – Now What? – Sunday, June 16, 1940

Within the past few weeks we have seen again the pouring forth from school doors of millions of our youth variously classified and labeled and certified as to their attainments and degrees of excellence in the great business of formal education. And many questions are being asked, as they always are at such times, one of the most important of which is asked by youth Itself, “You say we are educated – now what?”

And the answer is that we cannot predict the future with detailed and accurate certainty. That a given profession will continue to be in demand or that an established way of life will remain with us, cannot be foreseen. Swiftly moving events are breathtaking in the changes wrought by them. But no matter what lies before us, character industry, faith, intelligence, loyalty and determination will always be at high premium, and that time will never be found when the well-trained and honorable and willing young man or young woman will not be able to find a place or to make one, no matter how boundary lines are pushed around, and no matter how our fundamental standards seem to change, because, in reality, they do not, as we shall all behold when the smoke of battle and the confusion of the day have cleared away. And to youth, moving into that world which is waiting for them,  we say, in the words of the writer of Proverbs: “My son, keep thy Father’s commandment, and forsake not the law of the mother. Bind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them about thy neck. When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee.” Proverbs 6:20-22) The greatest confusion and discouragement is found in those places where this has not been remembered and where there has been some attempt to supplant the influence of the home and the greatest faith and stability yet reside where youth still gives allegiance to the traditions and teachings of a good home and worthy parents. So much should be said to the young men and young women whose world this will be tomorrow.

And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? * * * Take heed that no man deceive you. * * * Ye shall hear of wars and rumors of wars; see that ye be not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; and there shall be famines and pestilence, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrow. * * * And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. * * * And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. Then shall be great tribulation, such as was not seen since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved; but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened. * * * Behold, I have told you before. – – – So likewise, * * * when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors. * * * But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come. Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. * * Watch therefore, for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.” (Adapted from Mathew 24:2-42)
