Enthusiasm – August 26, 2001

On a hot, humid, sunny day, a small group of neighbors gathered with shovels and rakes and gardening tools at a local park.  The park had been too long neglected and was badly overrun with weeds and fallen leaves.  The neighbors had set a day to clean it up.  But as they surveyed the work that needed to be done, the job seemed endless and discouraging.  Then a pickup truck arrived, and a group of college students jumped out.  Some music began playing, and the students sang along as they worked.  Their enthusiasm and energy soon turned a dreary job into a more pleasant experience.  And within a few hours, the park was transformed.

Even the most mundane and tedious jobs can be transformed with a liberal dose of enthusiasm, which can be sustained or aroused by music.  A cheerful song, sung at a brisk tempo, can energize any task.

There are times when our lives are burdened with sorrow.  Music can lift our spirits and inspire us to contemplate the greatness and glory of God’s creations.  When joyful enthusiasm fills our spirits, our hearts are filled with vigor, and we’re prepared to serve with genuine devotion.

An enthusiastic song of the heart will make service a delight, a labor of love, and a hymn of praise.
