Feed My Sheep – April 22, 2001

We live in a remarkable age.  Visit the palaces of the wealthiest kings known to history and marvel at the expansive parks and buildings, the sumptuous furnishings, the gold-framed mirrors, and the masterful works of art.  And yet, it’s sobering to realize that, in most ways that really matter, ordinary citizens in the most fortunate nations on earth today live more luxuriously than the wealthiest of yesterday’s kings.  In terms of nutrition, education, technology, medical advances, health, and safety, our lives are infinitely improved from the lives of our forebears.

We acknowledge that far too many of our brothers and sisters on this earth don’t share our plenty.  When Jesus walked the earth, He said to His disciples, “Ye have the poor with you always.”1 The poor are still with us.  After His Resurrection Jesus admonished Peter, “If thou lovest me, feed my sheep.”2

We may have a desire to do what we can for the less fortunate, but we may not see how we can share more than we already do.

Even small sacrifices, however, do far more than we realize.  A modest contribution may do a great deal of good in the world.  The small act of kindness or charity, like a stone tossed in a still pond, can start a ripple effect of goodness and mercy.

As we give of our abundance to those in need, as we feed His sheep, we in turn can be fed—with peace of mind and soul.
