Give Me This Mountain – February 11, 2001
We live in an age when many deny the existence of God. However, even those who claim to be atheists often recognize in those who believe, a strength, comfort, and peace. Recently, a group of medical students listened to a famous guest physician lecture on the factors that contribute to recovery from major illness. The doctor reported that patients who believe in God have a better chance of a fast recovery. However, he took great pains to make sure the students knew he did not believe in God, and that there was no scientific basis for this phenomenon.
As the lecture ended, a student asked, “Is there any logical reason for a person to believe in God?”
To the student’s surprise, the avowed atheist answered: “Yes, there is one. People who believe in God are happier.”
Happiness is not the only blessing that comes from belief. When we trust in God, we’re comforted in our times of sorrow, and strengthened when we’re weak. We have confidence to face the trials of life, because we know there’s someone who will help us do the things we need to do.
We know that the source of all that’s good in our lives is God. We know because we’ve felt Him lift and strengthen us. We know because we’ve been the recipients of His redeeming love.
