Hearing the Voice of God – October 01, 2000

We know we can share our hopes, our fears, our deepest needs with a loving Father in Heaven through prayer.  Still, there are times we may wonder if He’s actually heard us.  We want Him to answer those heartfelt prayers.  We want to hear His voice and feel His presence reaching out and touching us.  And yet, we often do the very thing that stops this divine process from happening.

It’s much like the father who comes to his teenage daughter and says, “Sweetheart, I have a suggestion that would help you with your school report.”  And the daughter, at her computer, says:  “Not now, Daddy.  I’m too busy trying to figure out how to write my report.”  Do we, in effect, say: “Not now, Father.  I’m too busy worrying about my problem”?  Do we lay our burden at the Lord’s feet without giving Him a chance to help us lift the burden?  What can we do to allow our Divine Creator to communicate with us?

A concerned mother discovered an answer to this question early one morning when she prayed fervently for her wayward son.  After her prayer, she picked up her scriptures, opened the sacred book, and began reading.  A certain passage stood out as if it were bold-faced.  It was her answer.  She knew God was speaking to her through His written word.  By reading scriptures, we can hearHis voice speak to our souls.

Meditation is also a way to allow Deity to communicate with us.  A man who was seeking spiritual guidance for a problem found the value of being alone in his study, just sitting quietly, clearing his mind of all distractions.  It was then that a thought came to him beyond his own knowledge, a thought that led him to a solution.  He was certain it was an answer to his prayers.

It can happen in a quiet room, on a quiet walk, or in any place of peace.  It’s often the quiet that opens the ears of our soul to hear the answers from on high.
