Hold On through the Hard Times – August 06, 2000
Years ago, Nat King Cole touched the hearts of many when he sang the words, “When I fall in love, it will be forever.” For many couples, this philosophy of enduring love is a beacon in the storms of life. To have a worthy goal and hold on to it through tough times is essential to success in any venture, but especially in the most important venture of all—marriage. One couple remembers buying a little plaque on their honeymoon that pictured a forlorn-looking fellow with a cloudburst pouring down on him. He was saying, “Into each life a little rain must fall, but this is ridiculous!” The couple commented that they thought it was quite humorous then, but through the years they have experienced the feelings it portrayed.
Countless marriages have made it through the storms they faced, and countless others have abandoned sacred vows in the midst of the downpour. Abandoning a marriage during a stressful time is like throwing away an exquisite diamond just before it’s been polished to achieve its most brilliant sparkle. Many have realized that holding on to each other allows the stormy seasons of life to serve as a bridge that will lead to a relationship more radiant and beautiful than they ever thought possible—a relationship that never could have had the full depth and beauty without the struggle.
Many couples face with grace, dignity, and devotion horrendous difficulties. Such was the case of a couple who endured the difficulties with having two severely disabled children, needing their constant care. They discovered the priceless truth that their love for each other could endure, and even be magnified, if they walked this rocky road together. Through it all, they discovered the value of nurturing not only their needy children but also their love for each other. Accepting help from others gave them time to strengthen their marriage. At times it was no more than going out for ice cream together, or taking a quiet walk in a park, hand in hand, enjoying the beauties of nature. They discovered that two hearts holding on to each other will keep either one from breaking. Couples can make it through the hard times and love can be forever.
