Receiving Divine Guidance – August 22, 1999
One of the many ways that God shows His love for us is the guidance and inspiration He sends into our lives. As children of our Heavenly Father, we can rest assured that He will lovingly lead us if we are willing to listen and to learn.
Divine guidance can come in many forms: prayers about important decisions are answered, new ideas come into our minds, and feelings that are powerful and undeniable fill our hearts. Sometimes only in grateful retrospect do we realize how pervasive God’s guiding influence has been in our lives. He is always willing to lead us—if we are willing to be led.
Consider the story of a young boy’s hike on a steep mountain trail near his home. As afternoon faded into evening, the older boys he’d accompanied unintentionally left him behind as their paths wound through some rugged cliffs. When night fell, he was still only halfway down a perilous part of the descent. Facing the cliff wall in the darkness, the boy was no longer sure he was on the trail. Unable to see where he could safely take his next step, he was afraid to try climbing either up or down.
Then, from the level ground below, he heard his father’s voice calling, “Son, can you hear me?” Anticipating the situation, his father had come to the base of the cliffs carrying a powerful flashlight. Using the flashlight, his father illuminated where his son could safely step. Shining the light on the rocks, his father showed him one foothold after another, shouting instructions and encouragement until the two embraced at the trail’s end.
Likewise, in life we seldom see the entire course of our journey, but seeing the next step is enough when we know that the Divine Guide who lights our path also awaits us at our journey’s end.
