True Religion – Sunday, May 31, 1981
Because of the many religious sects in existence today, it is sometimes difficult to discover truth. Certainly, the sublime and simple teachings of Jesus have undergone a multitude of translations and interpretations which have resulted in the many diverse Christian creeds which abound in our world.
Christ, Himself, gave us the key to the discovery of true religion: “For”, He said, “the tree is known by its fruit.” Regardless of its claims to authority, its theological proofs or authentic artifacts, religion must still be analyzed in the light of its fruits, its effects upon the collective and individual happiness of mankind. For it is happiness in this life and continued joy in the eternities beyond which are the sole objective of religious activity.
True religion has never deprived man of a single joy; it is a false creed which teaches that a mournful countenance is the way to heaven. Heaven is no more than an extension of this life. If our way of life does not produce happiness for us now it is not likely to bring us joy in the hereafter.
Thus, true religion is not just a Sunday worship, but a worshipful existence. It is not contained solely in perpetual praises, prayers, and holy ordinances, but must involve perpetual service, patience and charity.
True religion, religion in action, can be found wherever there is human need or suffering.
It will be observed in the visiting rooms of prisons, hospitals, and mental institutions. It will be seen with a friend above the open grave of a loved one. Its presence will be felt from the neighbors and friends of those who are experiencing financial or marital difficulties. It will be encountered in youth camps and clinics for the disadvantaged, the handicapped or the elderly.
Service, not adoration, is the primary product of religion, and faith, not superstition, is its method .
Stated simply: True religion is to do good—to do good, whenever., wherever, and to whomever we can. “For a tree is known by its fruit.”
